I was looking for some linux/php file manager with some simple user control. After testing some simple and some not so simple solutions, this seems to be the best!!! Very powerful especially it allows me to control who can download/upload files. Give this a try and you will not regret. Remember to donate to the author for his hardwork.
The best file manager

This is the best file manager that I tested. Perfect work, with XHTML and CSS, a lot of features, great admin panel with users, configurations and groups, multiple upload and thumbnail creation. Icon or image view, with a lot of details. Name, title and description to files and folders. Actions with multiple files (delete, move, copy, download). Extract compressed files, ... it's wonderful... and free.
Awesome, slick, fast to install, works "out of the box"

I can't imagine why other people left lower than a 3 rating, much less a 4 even. I had this running within 2 minutes of downloading, and I am very impressed. My non-profit will benefit greatly from this. The feature I am most excited about is the ability to add a "tag/title/description" which means, in essence, that it does not matter where the file is stored, as long as it has the correct tag/description, all of my users can find it easily with the search function!
I wish I could get it to work

The program looks very usefull and good however I cannot get it to run as the instructions are in (I believe) spanish, and the english instructions are very poor to where I cannot understand them.
